Fiscal Sponsorship

  1. What is a fiscal sponsor?
  2. Requirements

Fine arts organizations or groups which do not have state or federal non-profit status may collaborate with another 501(c)3 organization, who acts as the applicant's fiscal sponsor.

What is a fiscal sponsor?

A fiscal sponsor is any federal non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization that agrees to accept funds restricted for the sponsored project. The tax-exempt organization accepts full responsibility to ensure the funds are properly spent and any donations are considered tax-exempt for the donor.

Funds received through a fiscal sponsorship agreement should be for a project that is in line with the sponsor's own tax exempt purpose.

Requirements

If your organization uses a fiscal sponsor to receive a Trust grant, the fiscal sponsor must:

  • provide contact information in the application,
  • sign the grant contract,
  • receive the grant funds,
  • and disperse the funds to the applicant.

You must have a written contract with your fiscal sponsor, specifying the responsibilities of each party. A copy of the contract must be submitted with your application.
